Oscar fish sold in the aquarium trade come in several colour and pattern varieties, but they are not separate species. Names such as Tiger, Red, Albino and Lemon are commonly used in the hobby, while Blue and Bumblebee are less-standardized seller labels whose appearance may vary.

Albino Oscar with a pale body, red eyes and orange markings

1. Albino Oscar

Albino Oscars have a pale white, cream or pinkish body, red or pink eyes and orange-red markings across the flanks and fins. The red eyes help separate a true albino from other pale Oscar varieties, while the amount and placement of orange patterning can differ between individual fish.

Tiger Oscar with irregular orange-red markings on a dark body

2. Tiger Oscar

Tiger Oscars have irregular orange or red markings over a dark grey, charcoal or black body. The broken stripes and marbling vary from fish to fish, and many also show the familiar eyespot near the base of the tail. Tiger describes the colour pattern, not a separate Oscar species.

Lemon Oscar with a pale yellow body and warm orange accents

3. Lemon Oscar

Lemon Oscar is a trade name used for pale yellow to lemon-coloured Oscars, sometimes with orange or reddish accents around the head, gill area or fins. The label can overlap with pale lutino or yellow colour morphs, so buyers should judge the actual fish rather than expect every Lemon Oscar to have an identical shade.

Red Oscar with extensive orange-red colour across the body

4. Red Oscar

Red Oscars are selectively bred for broad orange-red coverage across much of the body instead of the more broken markings seen on Tiger Oscars. The head and fins may remain darker, creating a strong contrast, while the exact depth and distribution of red colour can vary between fish.

Oscar fish sold as Bumblebee Oscar with yellow and dark contrasting markings

5. Bumblebee Oscar

Bumblebee Oscar is a less-standardized aquarium-trade label usually applied to fish with strong yellow or golden colour against dark bands, blotches or mottling. Because the name is not used consistently by every breeder or seller, appearance can vary and the actual fish should be checked carefully before purchase.

Oscar fish sold as Blue Oscar with a bluish iridescent sheen

6. Blue Oscar

Blue Oscar is another non-standardized trade label used for Oscars showing a bluish, steel-blue or iridescent sheen over darker scales. The effect can change with lighting, camera settings and the fish’s condition, so the name should not be treated as a guaranteed or scientifically defined colour strain.
