Guppies are available in many selectively bred varieties, with differences in colour, body pattern and tail shape. This visual guide introduces eight popular types of guppies and the main feature that makes each one easy to recognise.
1. Neon Blue Guppy
Neon Blue Guppies are selectively bred for their bright blue sheen, which is usually strongest on males and may appear more intense under aquarium lighting. The colour strain can be combined with several body patterns and tail shapes, so not every Neon Blue Guppy looks exactly the same.
2. Round Tail Guppy
Round Tail Guppies have a compact tail fin with a smooth, rounded outline instead of a long triangular or flowing shape. Their shorter tail gives them a balanced appearance and makes the tail shape easier to distinguish from delta, fan and veil varieties.
3. Koi Guppy
Koi Guppies are named for colour patterns that resemble ornamental koi, commonly combining a pale or white base with red, orange and sometimes black markings. The exact placement of the patches varies between fish, which gives each Koi Guppy a slightly different appearance.
4. Snakeskin Guppy
Snakeskin Guppies are recognised by fine, linked markings that resemble scales, chains or a net across the body and fins. These patterns may appear in red, blue, green, yellow, orange or black, with males usually showing the strongest contrast.
5. Albino Guppy
Albino Guppies have reduced dark pigment, giving them red or pink eyes and a pale white, cream or peach body. They can still display strong red, orange, yellow or blue colours on the body and fins, with Full Red Albino being one of the best-known colour strains.
6. Delta Tail Guppy
Delta Tail Guppies have a broad triangular tail that widens from the base and forms a shape similar to the Greek letter delta. The tail may be solid-coloured or patterned, and its wide spread makes this one of the most recognisable fancy guppy tail forms.
7. Leopard Guppy
Leopard Guppies are identified by dark spots that resemble a leopard pattern, usually appearing most clearly on the tail and sometimes extending across the body. Yellow or orange with black spots is common, but blue, green, red and mixed-colour strains are also available.
8. Fancy Tail Guppy
Fancy Tail Guppy is a broad aquarium-trade name for guppies bred with large, decorative and flowing tail fins. Many have wide fan-like tails, while their colours and patterns can vary greatly, so the tail shape is usually the easiest feature to notice first.
